Ranking SPs is further complicated by the volatility of standard pitching stats, particularly wins. Strikeouts is a fairly reliable stat for pitchers, but even WHIP and ERA can fluctuate noticeably from year-to-year. We saw that last season with Blake Snell and Chris Sale, among others. Because of that, advanced stats like BABIP, FIP, and SIERA can give us a much better picture of how a player really performed last season – and could perform this season....
With third base morphing into a version of its cross-diamond counterpart, most of the players below are all about power and run production, at least in the upper tiers. You can find some steals further down the list, but those aren’t guys you want starting for you at 3B after the draft. They’re good backups/CIs, but to keep pace in your league, you need a bopper at the hot corner....
And while picking up someone like Sean Manaea and Jose Berrios is all well and good, nothing will cause a rush to the wire like a new closer being available. With the Bills, Eagles, Rams, and Vikings all on bye in Week 7, that’s at least three D/STs that likely need to be replaced in lineups. It’s also one top D/ST matchup (Rams) off the board. One of the defensive storylines of the first half of the fantasy season is that Bill Belichick and the Pats once again have a weekly stud of a D/ST (vs. Bears in Week 7)....
What may initially stick out is the use of four defenders instead of the back three that is so thoroughly en vogue in both real life and Fantasy. There’s a lot of reasoning behind this but, at it’s most basic level, they are cheaper, carry less ownership, and have more routes to points than the players further up the pitch. In fact, last season, three of the top 10 point scorers in the Goal Champions League game were defenders....
- He's averaging just 2.8 yards per carry, tied for last in the league among qualified running backs. - He has been held to 36 rushing yards or less four times in five games. - He's on pace for 232 receiving yards, which would be the lowest of his career. - He has lost five fumbles in his last nine games. Actually, those are downright depressing facts for the fantasy first-rounder....
