One of the reasons we can’t call TE “deep” just yet is because Kyle Pitts (vs. Browns in Week 4) hasn’t fully made that Year 2 leap. He finally got going last week, but guys like Dallas Goedert (vs. Jaguars) and Zach Ertz (@ Panthers) might be just as good in PPR formats. Goedert is dealing with a shin injury, though, which has his availability for Week 4 in question.
Arguing over top players is a luxury most fantasy owners don’t have, though. Instead, they’re worried about the TEs who seem to be on the start-sit bubble every week. Tyler Higbee (@ 49ers) has been great this year, especially in PPR, but a matchup against the league’s toughest TE defense makes him riskier than usual. T.J. Hockenson (vs. Seahawks) and Dawson Knox (@ Ravens) are also in that tier, but both have favorable matchups this week and should get going for their owners.

In addition to Higbee, a few other notable TEs are in bad spots this week. Logan Thomas (vs. Cowboys), Hunter Henry (@ Packers), and Irv Smith Jr. (vs. Saints) all face defenses in the bottom 10 in fantasy points allowed to tight ends. Henry and Smith have both been TD-or-bust players with less value in PPR leagues, so they’re not tough to sit, but Thomas is usually a better PPR play, so he still has some upside despite last week’s no-show.

If you were planning on starting any of those players, you might want to pivot to Njoku (@ Falcons), Tyler Conklin (@ Steelers), or Hayden Hurst (vs. Dolphins), all of whom have favorable matchups this week. Njoku had some breakout buzz before the year, but Conklin has been a nice, high-target surprise. Hurst took a step back last week, but his overall body of work this year is still solid. All should provide a decent baseline of points in PPR leagues. The same goes for Evan Engram (@ Eagles), who has emerged as a nice security blanket for Trevor Lawrence. Gerald Everett (@ Texans) is coming off a bad game and faces a surprisingly solid Texans’ defense, but he still sees consistent targets, so he should be in most PPR lineups, too.
WEEK 4 FANTASY PICKS: Sleepers | Busts | Start ’em, sit ’em
We’ll continue to learn more about this position and, more important, the best/worst TE matchups as the season wears on. It’s a little too early to officially call anyone a “bust” because we know a TE is always one TD catch away from being a top-five player in a given week, but some genuine breakouts sure seem to be emerging. You don’t necessarily need a season-long breakout to have success at this position, though – you just need the guy who breaks out that week. We’ll do our best to monitor the numbers and help you find those guys going forward.
