I graduated from a college that was a 12-story office building. After I saw Harvard, I said to my wife, “I think I really missed out on something. From now on when we travel, I want to visit the local school.” I’ve been to 383 campuses since then.
I think it’s a good idea to stay overnight and talk to as many kids as you can. You need people who will be honest. I always like getting the student newspaper. You’ll learn a lot that way.
The last time I was at Colgate was 1986. I visited Sweet Briar on this trip; that was one of the most beautiful campuses I’ve ever seen. University of Richmond was beautiful as well. I don’t know if my favorite has changed; I’m putting those two in my top five.
Occasionally I’ll walk into a classroom that’s empty and I’ll write [on the chalkboard] my name, the date and the number of that campus in my count.
