Why is it important for you to speak up? It’s a really terrifying time to be young. The world ahead doesn’t look very promising.
Do people at the shows agree? We have so much baggage from history we are forced to carry, and it’s really hard to mend these things that have been developing for years. I wish you could just take people under 30 and erase their memories and start from scratch.
In one song you added the verse: “Send us off to a foreign land to fight the infidels / God protects the oil wells / God saves gas prices / God saves Texas family fortunes.” Something like that. Nearly every night the crowd burst into applause–strange because I don’t see a lot of opposition. It would be nice if some bigger-profile people would speak out.
What are the journalists asking you in Europe? They always seem so happy when they hear my critiques. The view of Americans is just so negative right now, and I’m not even traveling in hostile places–we’ll be in, like, Sweden.
