Why write the book early?

The problem with other campaign books is that they come out when everyone knows the outcome. No one wants to read a chapter beginning “Bill Bradley was nervous.”

You hit the trail very early.

It’s the only way to see them before they’ve become choreographed like a Broadway musical.

Who’s the most fun to cover?

Joe Lieberman was the first candidate to offer me Passover matzoh. And John Kerry flew me to a campaign event in New Hampshire at the controls of a small plane–my pilot in more than a metaphysical sense. He is more of a real person than his campaign would lead you to think.

Who will make the final two?

Howard Dean and the anti-Dean, who this week might be Dick Gephardt or–in my longshot guess–John Edwards.
