Does this feel like a comeback?
I haven’t been away. I’ve been working my heinie off. I’ve made over 50 movies. It’s a function of how the distribution system works in the U.S. It’s just about not being seen.
But weren’t there some years after “Flashdance” when it felt pretty bleak?
You have no idea what’s around the corner. Just when you think there are no scripts, something arrives like “Roger Dodger,” a chance to enter heaven. There was always a sliver of hope.
What do you think of “Flashdance”?
I don’t know. I don’t think about it that often. I haven’t seen it since probably 1984.
I recommend it.
Why do you think it was such a hit?
Probably because you took your bra off under your shirt.
That was just something I did in a wardrobe fitting. Adrian [Lyne, the director] was there. They wanted to see something I was wearing underneath. I took it off under my shirt. They said, how did you do that? I said, every girl knows how to do that. Everyone who’s ever gotten dressed in a car knows how to do that.
