Employee and TikTok user @fryer.friend is yet to confirm which fast food restaurant she works at, but has been sharing videos online of a behind-the-scenes look at the deep fat fryer.
On December 3, she shared a video showing how she changes the oil in the machine. The clip has gained over 6 million views and sparked an array of opinions, including those promising to not eat fast food again.
The worker began by dipping a tool into each pool of oil to decide which most needed changing. “What I’m looking for is the visibility on that little indentation,” she said. “To be honest they’re both pretty bad.”
@fryer.friend took out the basket, placing it on the trash can, before disposing of the oil. She then scraped out the black gunk and dirt on the bottom of the fryer, before wiping it down with tissue. The fryer was then filled back up with new oil.
In a follow-up video with over 500,000 views, she showed a close up on just how much grease is scraped out of the fryer, with thick layers coming off.
Unsurprisingly, the amount of grease shown to be inside of a deep fat fryer has put some viewers off eating in fast food restaurants again, despite the specific chain being unknown.
“Welp i’m never eating out again,” commented one user.
“Give fast food workers a break. If I was paid the same as them I would never change the oil,” countered another user.
Many people, however, were left concerned by the protocol shown in the video, with alleged fast food employees claiming they clean their fryers to a different standard. Some restaurants perform a “boil-out” clean where the oil is removed and replaced with water and a cleaning solution.
According to the worker herself, who liked one comment, there seems to have been confusion among viewers between a simple oil change and a deep clean. In the video, an oil change was shown, which occurs far more frequently than a deep clean.
“Wow people here are really getting angry about the difference between an oil change and a deep clean huh,” read the comment.
The TikTok user showed the different method she uses for a deep clean instead, showing herself using a de-greaser spray. “I’m gonna let it soak for a little bit,” she explained, before scrubbing it later.
“I was able to get a lot of stuff off and i’m excited to keep working on it,” she said, showing the fryer with a lot less dirt and grime than in the oil change video.
