Earlier this year, NutraSweet gave up on its version of ice cream called Simple Pleasures. Lousy mouth feel? Perhaps, but the fake stuff is still used in cheese and mayonnaise.

Developed by scientists at Brandeis University, Appetize cuts saturated fat in vegetable oil by 50 percent. Look for it in french fries, margarine and ice cream sometime next year.
