Squaring Off–And Making History
When Venus Williams beat Steffi Graf at the Lipton Championships on Friday, she pointed toward the stands at her sister Serena and gestured, It’s you and me. Their showdown on Sunday marked the first sister-vs.-sister finale in tennis in 115 years. So far, the sisters haven’t shown signs of sibling rivalry–they’re practicing partners, full-time travel companions and best friends. “I really don’t want them to have friends outside the family,” their father and coach, Richard Williams, told NEWSWEEK in August. “They have each other. That’s all they need.”
Papal View Special
The pope formerly known as Karol Wojtyla has released his first music video. The music on “Abba Pater” is about what you’d expect: John Paul II reading from the Bible and chanting in Italian, backed by a choir, a classical orchestra and the occasional New Age strain. But the PG-13 images–a suckling baby, a man and a woman in Eden-like nakedness–are enough to make a choirboy blush. And some adults, too. “There’re some torsos in it that we’re going to have to have Standards and Practices go over,” says Wayne Isaak, vice president of music programming at VH1, which plans to air the video in light rotation. “We may have to digitize it or something.” Is nothing sacred?
