The creature was caught by Russian fisherman Roman Fedortsov, who posted a picture of the sea anemone to his Instagram in 2021 where it received 58,587 likes.

Sea anemones are found in the world’s oceans and are often vibrant colors. Despite looking like a plant, they are predatory animals that feed on plankton and fish.

Fedortsov told Newsweek that the anemone was caught in the Norwegian sea, and it is not the first specimen he has seen that looks like this.

Fedortsov is known on social media for documenting his strange finds at the bottom of the ocean. In July, he posted a picture on Instagram of a crab that appeared to be growing human teeth.

Fedortsov told Newsweek that his fishing crew had been aiming to catch cod when the crab was scooped up, adding that it did not actually have human teeth, but rather, they were a kind of growth.

The orange anemone has huge white blobs in its middle of its bright orange body that look like a pair of eyes.

“Omg they killed Kenny!” Fedortsov said in an Instagram caption, referring to a cartoon character called Kenny McCormick from animated television series South Park.

Fedortsov has been working on a fishing trawler off the Russian coast for nearly 20 years.

Trawler boats are fixed at the back with a huge net, which is pulled through the water and along the bottom of the sea, or at a specified depth of 980 to 3,300 feet, catching any creatures in their path.

The sea anemone was recently reposted to Reddit where it received 18,000 upvotes on the page BeAmazed.

Other social-media users were amused at the creature’s resemblance to the South Park character Kenny, and Redditors started to call the strange find “Kennemone.”

One Reddit user even questioned whether the anemone was a real anima.

“It’s a type of anemone, the most likely reason it looks like this is that it’s in the process of splitting. Most (all?) anemones are asexual and reproduce by basically growing a 2nd head and then cutting themselves in half,” another Reddit user replied.

“I’m not an expert so I could be wrong, but I’ve kept a handful of anemones in my saltwater aquarium and even had one split once.”

Others agreed that splitting was the most likely explanation for its appearance.

“Sea anemones actually reproduce like cells. They’re asexual. To me it looks like a sea anemone halfway through splitting into a copy of itself,” another social-media user said.

Another Reddit user said it looked like a “freak of nature.”
