The Museum Fire, which started just north of Flagstaff in the Coconino National Forest on July 21, has burned more than 1,400 acres and is currently 10 percent contained, according to Inciweb.
In an update, firefighters said they were able to take advantage of favorable weather conditions to conduct burnout operations on the north edge of the blaze, with helicopters dropping water to cool down hotspots within the perimeter.
Around 500 personnel have been deployed to tackle to blaze. It is hoped that showers and thunderstorms will hit the fire at some point today. Residents in Mount Elden Lookout Estates, Paradise Road, Grandview Drive and Sunnyside neighborhoods have also been warned that the heavy rainfall could bring flash flooding to the area.
There have been no reports of injuries or death as a result of the fire and no homes have been destroyed. Tens of thousands of people have been put on pre-evacuation notice in the surrounding areas, with a mandatory evacuation order for all those living, working or accessing a home from Mount Elden Lookout Road in Flagstaff still in place.
The evacuation order, which was issued on July 22, is intended to assist with the burnout operations and prevent the fire from spreading to the neighborhood.
Arizona Governor Doug Ducey previously declared a state of emergency in Coconino County as a result of the Museum Fire. A similar state of emergency is also in place for Flagstaff.
“Public safety is our top priority, and this declaration will ensure emergency officials have the resources they need to continue protecting people, pets and property,” Ducey said in a statement. “I am grateful to the first responders we met today who are battling the Museum Fire. We are praying for the safety of the firefighters on the front lines and the residents affected by the fire.”
An investigation into how the fire broke out is still underway.
The communities which are currently on pre-evacuation status include Peak View Country Store, Magdalena, Kelly McCoy, Forest Hills, Valley Crest, Lockett Ranch, Mount Elden Lookout Estates, north and west of Highway 89 and Silver Saddle, Hutcheson Acres, McCann Estates, Little Elden Springs, Black Bill Park, Wupatki Trails, Pine Mountain Estates, West of Highway 89 from Railhead north to Townsend-Winona, including the KOA Campground, and Christmas Tree Estates.
