With injuries already rearing their ugly heads, now is a perfect time to look ahead and try to find some value adds before they cost a valuable waiver claim. Making the most of every roster spot early in the season can pay off handsomely down the line. Maybe you just freed up a spot because one of your players became IR-eligible; maybe you recently dropped fringe veterans. Use the free space to invest in a potential lotto ticket — a player who you anticipate could see a spike in usage, opportunity to breakout, or a return from injury....

And even though it’s going to be a running back-heavy waiver wire, there are several tight ends, a few overlooked wide receivers, and a handful of streamer D/STs that could be of use to you if you have bye-week (Bengals, Bills, Cowboys, Seahawks) or injury issues. With very few standout options, this week is all about collecting depth. If you’re in relatively decent shape at RB, you can probably save your claim and move up the ladder; if you’re hurting, then you should take the plunge and hope you hit on a starter....

We’re still high on Luck and Gurley in our quarterback and running back rankings, respectively, but even if you stick with them in standard leagues, they’ll likely be overvalued in daily fantasy football rankings. Conversely, this week’s top waiver wire pickups, like Tajae Sharpe or Mike Wallace, might be risky starters in standard leagues but great values in DFS contests. Cam Newton, despite scoring fewer than 30 total fantasy points against the subpar defenses of the 49ers and Bills, plays the cures-all-fantasy-woes Saints defense at home, so expect his first big performance of the year. Similar with Newton, we’re not ready to give up on Kirk Cousins against a weak Raiders secondary that allowed two TDs to Josh McCown last week. For those in two-QB leagues with Blake Bortles and Joe Flacco, remember that they play in London on Sunday with kickoff set for 9:30 am ET....
