On Wednesday, nearly 3,000 miniature American flags had been placed in Boston’s Public Garden to honor the victims of the attacks. But on Thursday morning, some of the flags were found broken and strewn across the ground, local news station WCVB reported. A video posted to Twitter by WCVB reported Josh Brogadir Thursday morning, shows flags that had been uprooted spilling over onto the sidewalk, and a trash can near the display knocked over....

The Calgary bench boss took questions on Thursday at the Flames’ media day. The Florida Department of Health announced a scale back of their public data in early June, citing an increase in vaccinations and decrease in new cases. The state began to observe a spike in new cases just weeks later, driven by the highly virulent Delta variant. Florida’s weekly data, released on Fridays, still provides communities with the overall trends. Cases have continued to climb in the state that now accounts for 20 percent of the country’s new COVID-19 cases, with its latest release showing 73,000 additional infections, nearly double the 45,000 reported in the previous week....

Aquarium President James “Buddy” Powell said they plan to release her ashes next month. “Returning Winter to her natural home is a poetic ending to her 16-year journey and we couldn’t think of a better way to lay her spirit to rest,” Powell said. The aquarium set up an ongoing memorial, as well, for people to bring notes, cards and remembrances of Winter. Winter died at age 16 on November 11 because of an inoperable gastrointestinal abnormality, according to the Associated Press....

A legislative panel voted 15-5 Thursday to recommend House Bill 1557, the Parental Rights in Education bill. State Representative Joe Harding, a Williston Republican who sponsored the bill, said he introduced the legislation in response to districts not informing parents and policies affecting the well-being of their children. The four-page bill would require schools to notify parents if there is a change in services or monitoring around their child’s “mental, emotional, or physical health or well-being....

The visit to the Joseph C. Carter Park pool last Sunday was the first for Florida attorney Ghenete Wright Muir and her 23-year-old son, who are both former competitive swimmers. The mother and son normally swim with the Diversity in Aquatics Swim Club, an organization that teaches people of color and from underrepresented communities on water safety and water recreation. But Wright Muir told Newsweek she and her son had been unable to work out at their regular pool, so she encouraged him to find an Olympic-sized pool nearby....

DeSantis held a roundtable discussion on challenges facing nursing homes and other long-term care facilities amid the pandemic in Jacksonville on Tuesday. Facilities were closed to visitors over concerns that the virus could easily spread and infect vulnerable residents in mid-March. The governor lamented that “four and a half months is a long time” and said he was considering allowing some to visit facilities despite the virus being far more widespread in the state than it was when the policy was implemented....

On Wednesday, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed an executive order overriding local mandates requiring people to wear masks in public. The news prompted one Florida lawmaker to call for DeSantis to follow suit, but the governor isn’t likely to grant his request. “Governor DeSantis believes in a bottom up decision making process and not from the top down,” the governor’s press office told Newsweek. “The needs of each community may differ, a cookie cutter approach does not work in a diverse state such as Florida, and he supports all local efforts to defeat this virus....

Sabatini enthusiastically voted in favor of House Bill 1557, which critics call the “Don’t Say Gay” law, in February and has been one of its highest-profile proponents ever since Disney issued a March 28 decree saying its “goal as a company is for this law to be repealed by the legislature or struck down in the courts.” In response, some lawmakers are threatening to reverse government favors that have benefited Disney since 1967, when Florida created something called the “Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID)....

Randall Curtis Caraway, 46, was detained on Wednesday after the 94-year-old victim was taken to hospital by Pasco County Fire Rescue. A witness, who has not been named, said the woman was not being cared for properly—even though her son was being paid to look after her. According to WFLA, which obtained a copy of the arrest report, Caraway and his mother both lived at the home—listed on police records as being located on Denton Avenue in Hudson....

Bennett J. Wyche, employed as a security specialist at the school district, was detained on a battery charge Wednesday and transported to Broward County Jail on $1,000 bond. A spokesperson for Broward County Public Schools said earlier this week that an employee, now identified as Wyche, had been re-assigned following the incident, which took place on September 18 at Washington Park Community Center on Pembroke Road in Hollywood. The suspect’s job position aligned with the witness statements provided by the 17-year-old victim, who told WSVN last week that her attacker appeared to be wearing a Broward County employee shirt....

James Bryce, 46, was hunting for hog with his wife at the time of the gator attack, which took place at roughly 10 a.m. in the J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area in Loxahatchee, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) told media outlet WPEC. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement, posted to Facebook alongside a video of the rescue operation, that the man was found in a “heavy marsh area” of the nature preserve after being bitten on the right leg....

Brendan Sheridan, 32, was arrested and charged after police say he struck other boats at a Sarasota marina on Saturday. In the viral video, he can be seen pulling into the Bayfront Park Marina in Sarasota around midday on Saturday, reversing at high speed. The boat makes an abrupt stop and sits idly for a few seconds as a man can be heard commenting, “Someone doesn’t know what he’s doing....
