Deputy Jorge Sobrino has been terminated after an internal affairs investigation into the incident which took place on January 1, 2019, Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony announced at a news conference on Wednesday. Sobrino was caught on a body camera video punching David O’Connell and twisting his arm behind his back while he was handcuffed to a bed in hospital, WFLA reported. Sobrino had responded to a call at a Walmart in Pompano Beach, Florida, after eyewitnesses said O’Connell had tried to fight a store employee, the station reported....

Hours after the coaches poll push Alabama to No. 1 on points, AP voters left the Seminoles in first place. They gave them more first-place votes and more total points. Whitney Leigh Reddick, a special education teacher within the Duval County Public Schools system in Jacksonville, Florida, became the latest teacher to write her own obituary as she and thousands of others prepare to welcome students back for fall classes. “With profound sadness,” begins Reddick’s obituary which listed her as dying this past Friday after she “succumbed to the ignorance of those in power.” Reddick insisted to Newsweek Saturday for her “it’s all about safety” and not politics....

The vaccination center at Daytona Stadium, in Daytona Beach, Florida, was set to vaccinate around 2,000 people aged 65 years and older against COVID-19 over Monday, January 4, and Tuesday, January 5, with around 1,000 doses being given per day. It was announced that the COVID-19 Moderna vaccine would be given for free on a first-come, first-served basis, which resulted in the center reaching capacity as hundreds of cars camped out overnight....

The flight had taken off from Pensacola International Airport in Florida for Miami at 5.43 a.m. on Friday, but it landed back at the airport less than 45 minutes later after a female passenger claimed to have a medical issue, an airline spokesman confirmed to Newsweek. The pilot declared an emergency and turned the flight back around after the woman, who has not been named, said she was having trouble breathing, Pensacola Police spokesperson Mike Wood told Newsweek....

Odette Joassaint, 41, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder early Wednesday morning and booked at a Miami-Dade jail. She allegedly told police that the “kids were suffering and that they would suffer less if they were dead,” the Miami Herald reported. Joassaint also told detectives to “come get them, I don’t want them anymore,” according to a police report. Joassaint’s 5-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son were pronounced dead at the scene after first responders tried to resuscitate them....

A Gallup poll published August 7 showed that if an FDA approved free COVID-19 vaccine were ready today, 35 percent said they would not have it. Support was lowest among Republicans, with just 47 percent saying they would get vaccinated under these circumstances. Non-white Americans, those from rural areas and those aged between 50 and 64 were all found to be most reluctant to the hypothetical vaccine. Concerns have been raised about the potentially low uptake of a future vaccine....

The annualized rate of inflation last month was 6.5 percent, down from 7.1 percent in November in what will likely be seen as another indication that U.S. inflation had peaked after previously reaching a 40-year high. The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI) fell by 0.1 percent month-on-month. That’s a significant development and another fall since November, when prices rose 0.1 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis....

Shortly after a portion of the Champlain Towers South collapsed on Thursday, authorities set up a family reunification center at the Surfside Community Center located at 9301 Collins Avenue. “A family reunification center is open for anyone looking for unaccounted or missing relatives at the Surfside Recreational Center located at 9301 Collins Avenue,” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue wrote in a tweet. While waiting at the family reunification center, officials continued DNA swab tests to help identify any possible relatives....

Delke waived his right to a parole hearing held Monday, an agreement that was part of his plea deal from last July. After facing charges of first-degree murder over the 2018 shooting, Delke, 28, agreed to a plea deal that avoided a trial and allowed him to plead guilty to manslaughter. Delke received a three-year sentence, and the plea deal stipulated that he would not seek parole. Hambrick, a 25-year-old Black man, was shot by Delke while fleeing with a gun, and his mother, Vickie Hambrick, reiterated her complaints about the plea deal she voiced last summer at the Monday hearing....

The lawsuit, filed by Lamb’s four minor children, accuses detective Eric DeValkanaere of violating Lamb’s civil rights when he ran onto Lamb’s property without a warrant and fatally shot Lamb while he sat in his pickup truck. DeValkanaere has been suspended for more than a year and is awaiting trial on charges of first-degree involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action in connection with Lamb’s death. The police department declined to comment on the lawsuit, citing a policy against commenting on pending litigation, according to the Associated Press....
