Meanwhile the Boston archdiocese announced it can’t afford a proposed settlement that would have paid up to $30 million to abuse victims; the reversal has infuriated victims. The drumbeat of news affects every Roman Catholic, but parishes like St. Nicholas carry a special burden, because they’ve lost their own priest to the scandal....

Victor Lofton, 57, of Humboldt, Tennessee, was charged in Lake County Superior Court, Indiana, last Tuesday over the gruesome 1992 murders of Felicia Howard, 21, and her daughter, DenNisha Howard. The charges were brought against Lofton following a probe by the FBI’s Gang Response Investigation Team (GRIT) who reopened the cold case in February 2019. According to detectives, Lofton denied having known either victim and to having been in Indiana during the murders when he was interviewed by investigators in September, last year....

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is recalling additional of brands manufactured by Midwestern Pet Foods following the discovery of potentially fatal levels of aflatoxin in some batches. The company had already recalled three varieties of Sportmix dog foods and cat foods in December after 28 dog deaths wee linked to the food. Another 42 dogs have died after eating the products in the past two weeks. The affected products were made in an Oklahoma manufacturing plant and distributed to online retailers and stores nationwide within the United States, the FDA said in a statement....

The unemployment rate rose from the near 50-year low of 3.5 percent to 4.4 percent with the economy losing 701,000 jobs, the largest over-the-month increase since January 1975, according to the agency. The number of unemployed people rose by 1.4 million to 7.1 million. The true number of jobless Americans is undoubtedly much higher, as the March jobs report only includes the first two weeks. March’s last two weeks saw a record of at least 10 million people file for unemployment benefits, the ramifications of which won’t be truly known until next month’s report....
