The Chesterfield County Fire and EMS first reported the news on Saturday night, stating in a Facebook post that Alicia A. Monahan, 41, had died unexpectedly while off duty. The strain, known as avian influenza H5N8, infected workers who were exposed to bird flocks, a World Health Organization (WHO) Europe spokesperson told CNN. The workers did not develop symptoms and there was no evidence reported that they passed the virus on to other people. Anna Popova, the head of Russia’s Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing, said in a press conference that H5N8 had been detected in seven poultry farm workers in the southern part of the country....

A team of scientists from both robotics company Sunfish Inc. and Sealaska Heritage Institute discovered the weir in Shakan Bay on the west side of Prince of Wales Island. The weir was first detected using sonar in 2010 but has now been confirmed as being a fish trap. Other stone weirs have been discovered around southeast Alaska, but this marks the oldest one ever found, and the first to be confirmed underwater in North America....

Murray, the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Oklahoma who was selected in the first round of last year’s MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics, announced his intentions to pursue a career in the NFL as a quarterback instead of the MLB as an outfielder. Police in Wales said they were called to a single-vehicle crash in Anglesey on Tuesday afternoon. When they arrived at the scene, they discovered the five occupants of the vehicle had traveled from Greater Manchester, England. Police said the men had come to Anglesey to buy a car. In a post on Facebook, North Wales Police said: “Occupants of the vehicle and a convoy vehicle had travelled from Greater Manchester to Anglesey to purchase a car....

Republican state Senator Tom Davis said he would filibuster the legislation on Thursday until the chamber voted to force him to end his use of the parliamentary procedure, which did not appear possible. The bill would have provided no exceptions for rape or incest and Davis was joined by four other Republicans, including all three Republican women in the state senate, in arguing for those exceptions. Twenty-six votes were needed to end Davis’ filibuster but the Republican majority did not appear to have the necessary votes, which ultimately derailed the bill....

A video shot by Alexey Paramonov, an inspector for Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) and published by The Siberian Times on Sunday, showed a mother and calf stranded by the mouth of the river Uda, which leads to the Sea of Okhotsk. The river is located near the far eastern village of Chumikan, in the Khabarovsk Krai region. The calf, shown wrapped in a blanket, can be heard crying in distress during the footage....
