Officials in Florida announced Thursday they have created a new task force dedicated to combating retail theft. Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody said she had launched the Florida Organized Retail Crime Exchange, “a first-of-its-kind, statewide task force and a new interactive database to help spot trends, identify suspects and take down massive, organized retail theft rings.” “We are seeing lawlessness and out-of-control mobs preying on businesses and consumers in major cities outside of Florida, and we will not allow these crime sprees to harm Floridians or our retailers,” Moody said in a statement....

Jonathan Markovich, 37, and Daniel Markovich, 33, both of Bal Harbour, conspired to collect the fraudulent money at a pair of addiction treatment facilities that they ran in south Florida. The first, Compass Detox, was an inpatient residential facility, and the second, WAR Network, was a similar outpatient center. Jonathan Markovich owned both of the properties, according to the DOJ. The facility’s websites state that they are able to provide help for a variety of addictions, including alcoholism, methamphetamines and cocaine....

The state is already breaking new records after it logged 1,486 deaths among residents over the past week from August 13 to 19, its highest ever total figure and more than any other state, according to The Palm Beach Post citing U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. The Johns Hopkins University tracker states that their figure of 1,486 average daily deaths recorded between August 15 and 21 is a record high for Florida....

Figures from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that the seven-day average in daily deaths for August was 244, beating the previous highest of 227 in August 2020. There were eight days in August with more daily deaths than during the last peak of the pandemic. The incident occurred on May 26 in Vero Beach, Fla., when Indian River County deputies tried to pull over a white Nissan Rogue for a traffic infraction of failing to maintain a lane. According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s office, Altman drove to Hernando County to pick up the 10-year-old without her parent’s consent on Saturday morning, reports WFTS. The suspect is then accused of taking the girl back to his home in Spring Hill and raping her. The victim allegedly told the 22-year-old to stop at least four times. The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a missing child and told Pasco deputies they believed she was with Altman....
