Latasha Latimer said she called the police after her two sons used the bathroom at the Walmart in River City Marketplace, Jacksonville, on August 10. The case originates from a domestic dispute involving Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Deputy Jefferson Davis, who accosted his girlfriend, also a sheriff’s deputy, on the suspicion that she was having an affair with another man. The Sunshine State recorded 46,923 new COVID-19 infections on Wednesday, the highest single-day increase since the pandemic began nearly two years ago. The new number shattered the previous record set on Christmas Eve of 32,874 daily cases. The day before that, December 23, the daily case record was broken for the first time since August with 31,744 positive tests confirmed. The additional 46,923 cases reported Wednesday launched Florida past 4 million total cases since the COVID-19 outbreak began in the United States in March 2020....

A judge in Tallahassee previously ruled against the mask mandate, and lifted a stay on his order halting the enforcement of the ban. The 1st District Court of Appeals ruled that the judge should not have lifted the stay, effectively putting the ban back into effect. Charles Gallagher, an attorney representing parents that are challenging DeSantis’ ban, said he is “disappointed” by the latest decision. “With a stay in place, students, parents and teachers are back in harm’s way,” Gallagher said in a tweet....

Nouman Raja, formerly an officer for Palm Beach Gardens, is serving a 25-year sentence after becoming the first member of Florida’s law enforcement to be convicted of an on-duty killing in nearly 30 years. A brief statement released by the Florida court said that it would not hear Raja’s appeal bid. Five of the court’s seven judges signed the decision, affirming an appeals court’s April ruling that a defendant can be convicted of both attempted murder and manslaughter in the killing of one person....

Joseph John Mazzara, 74, was the landlord arrested and charged with felony battery. He was released from the Pinellas County Jail after posting a $2,500 bond. Mazzara has one prior conviction of aggravated battery from January 2017. The incident took place in Indian Rocks, Florida, which is on the west central coast near Clearwater, and west of Tampa Bay. According to Google maps, the home is located on a small inlet bay that leads to the Gulf of Mexico....

Melvin Ray Wilcox, 39, was found dead March 18 after being reported as missing for several days. He was last seen in the community of Pine Hills, which is near Orlando. Wilcox had been shot in the head and twice in the area of his neck and shoulder, according to local authorities. Lashawn Triplett, 43, the mother of the victim’s child, and Johnny Wesley, 42, Wilcox’s friend, have been charged with first-degree murder with a firearm....

The victim, 67, was found suffering from a severely blackened eye, a broken rib, a number of bruises and injuries to his mouth by police called to Stone Creek Golf Club. According to testimony from the victim given to police, the alleged assailant, Tyler Dearden, 22, had been taking golf balls out of the bucket being used by the victim at the driving range. Dearden responded to the victim’s request that he stop by swearing and yelling at him after the victim approached him....

According to ClickOrlando, the incident occurred at 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of American Boulevard and Texas Avenue in Orlando, Florida. The unidentified 25-year-old pedestrian, who was last reported in stable condition, was crossing the street via a crosswalk when he was struck by a white sedan. Florida law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. “The driver of a vehicle at an intersection that has a traffic control signal in place shall stop before entering the crosswalk and remain stopped to allow a pedestrian, with a permitted signal, to cross a roadway when the pedestrian is in the crosswalk or steps into the crosswalk,” Section seven of Florida Statute 316....
